About Mouse Biology Program

The UCD Mouse Biology Program (MBP) is a coordinated, campus-supported teaching, research, and service resource of infrastructure and fundamental expertise directed at developing, promoting, and enhancing the use of mouse model systems for understanding and resolving biological problems.

Established in 1997, the goal of the MBP is to meet the needs of investigators utilizing genetically-altered mice for basic, clinical, and translational. The mission of the MBP is strive for excellence by focusing on hypothesis-driven research that advances health, well-being, and performance, and to educate and train the next generation of faculty, residents, graduate students, and veterinary students in the application of genetically-altered mice.

All mutant mouse resource activity on the UCD campus is encompassed within the MBP. The MBP is engaged in basic biology related to the “conceptualization, creation, and characterization" of mutant mice.

The MBP consists of an interdisciplinary group of collaborating scientists and technical staff who provide products and service (ES cell cloning, genetic analysis and screening, microinjection and mouse colony management, artificial reproductive techniques and cryopreservation, behavior, metabolic, and pathology phenotyping and microimaging, infectious disease diagnostics and animal health care, bioinformatics, and archival and distribution of ES cells, embryos, sperm, and live mice to the worldwide scientific community), and who engage in development and optimization of advanced technology that improves, expands, and refines the use of genetically-altered mice.

The MBP is comprised of 8 specialized and fully staffed laboratories that are co-located in a modern 20,000 ASF research facility assigned by UCD for exclusive use by the MBP. Each MBP laboratory is led by specialty-specific experienced faculty member who oversee a staff of highly skilled managers and qualified technical personnel.
